Indian Railways plans to develop 20GW solar projects

    The Ministry of Railways of India announced that Indian Railways plans to develop a 20 GW whole house solar panels solar project on its vacant land to help meet the consumer demand of more than 33 billion units by 2030.

    At the meeting, Piyush Goyal, Minister of the Union of Indian Railways, Commerce and Industry, discussed the Indian Railways’ goal of achieving 100% self-sufficiency in all electricity demand.

    Leading solar developers across the country also participated in the meeting to discuss innovative solutions for solar projects along the railway line to achieve the 20 GW renewable energy target.

    Not long ago, Goyal tweeted that by 2030, Indian Railways will achieve net zero carbon emissions, which makes it the first batch of green railways in the world.
 
    Currently, the task of Railway Energy Management Co., Ltd. (REMCL) is to build a 3 GW solar power project on the idle land of Indian Railways. REMCL is a joint venture between Indian Railways and RITES. REMCL has bid for a 2 GW solar project on unused railway land. In July, the company announced another tender to install a 1 GW solar project along the railway.
