Karnataka, India: plans to develop 1GW of rooftop PV within 5 years

    Recently, the government of the Indian state of Karnataka released the latest renewable Home Solar Power Plant energy policy, which is valid from 2022 to 2027. The policy aims to plan Karnataka as the preferred investment destination for renewable energy in India and to create an ecosystem for sustainable and green energy development. The state aims to develop 10GW of renewable energy projects (with or without energy storage) and 1GW of rooftop PV over the next five years.

    According to India's PV project tracking data released by Mercom, Karnataka's installed renewable energy capacity is close to 15.91GW as of March 2022, taking the lead. Karnataka also has one of the largest PV parks in India, the Pavagada PV Park, with a total installed capacity of 2,050MW.

    The latest renewable energy policy aims to develop the state’s key energy markets, including green energy corridors, renewable energy parks, photovoltaics, wind, energy storage, hybrid deployments, biomass, cogeneration, waste-to-energy projects, and Small hydropower projects.

    India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has identified PV park development sites in Karnataka’s Chitradurga, Davangere and Ballari, and the cumulative developed installed capacity will reach 11.07GW.
