Oman’s state-owned oil company OQ, US green hydrogen developer Intercontinental Energy LLC, and Enertech, a subsidiary of the Kuwait Investment Authority, announced a plan to build a 25GW House Solar System wind-solar complex in Al Wusta province in central Oman.
This huge facility will be used for "millions of tons" green hydrogen production. As stated by these three companies, the hydrogen can be consumed locally, exported, or converted into green ammonia for international export.
Although it did not specify the exact location of the project, the consortium said that the specific site will be close to the coast for seawater collection and electrolysis. A statement revealed, “In view of the strategic location of the site between Europe and Asia, as well as the excellent level of solar radiation and wind resources facing the Arabian Sea, this development project will enjoy various favorable conditions and be able to achieve competitive advantages. Prices provide the world with a safe and reliable supply of green fuel."
The three companies started project development in 2019 and conducted the first analysis of the project site at that time. According to their further explanation, “according to the amount of equipment required for a project of this scale, it can also support the development of Oman’s renewable energy supply chain manufacturing industry and expertise.”
More technical and financial details about this new plan have not yet been announced.
But this is not the only large-scale green hydrogen project under development in this Middle Eastern country. The Sohar Port Free Zone in Oman consists of a deep-sea port located in the coastal city of the same name and an adjacent free zone. It was announced in November that it was planning to build a large-scale green hydrogen production center powered by solar power stations. According to the plan, a total of about 3.5GW of photovoltaic installed capacity will be deployed, which is equivalent to the total power consumption of the entire port.
