Recently, a solar + energy storage project in New York has just been completed. This is the first similar community project in New York. The solar powered devices project is expected to help participants reduce electricity costs by 10% in the next 25 years.

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo proposed the deployment goals of 6,000 megawatts of solar photovoltaic power generation and 30 million kilowatts of energy storage for New York in 2025 and 2030. On September 21, local time, Andrew Cuomo announced that the project had been completed.

The project includes a 557KW rooftop solar array and 490kW/ 1960 kwh battery energy storage in a small town in York City. Cuomo said, “This is the first water test in New York’s solar-storage integration project, realizing renewable energy and energy storage. This will create a model state for the community to provide reliable, affordable and sustainable energy."

Jason Burwen, Vice President of Policy of the National Energy Storage Association, said: Earlier this year, it was reported that New York’s energy storage goals and related policies "bundled them with legal requirements" and helped to promote energy development and progress. State regulatory agencies conduct annual reviews. A few weeks ago, the utility company NYPA launched the state's first public independent energy storage system.

The project combines the Tesla Powerpack Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with 12 Tesla Supercharger stations for electric vehicles and will benefit approximately 150 households in Westchester County and New York City. The project was installed by the local company IPPsolar and operated by a division of the real estate investment trust company Urstadt Biddle Properties. In the event of a power outage, the system can be disconnected from the grid to provide power to participants.

The project received 800,000 US dollars of financial support, the funds from the utility company NYSERDA, and the local government specifically supported solar energy project NY-SUN and retail energy storage incentive projects. The latter provides funds for commercial customers to install fixed energy storage systems below 5MW, which provide value to customers at investor-owned utility (IOU) rates. In the NYSERDA service area, there are currently 50 community solar retrofitting projects under preparation and are expected to be deployed in the next two to three years. All projects provide the same micro-grid islanding capabilities as the just completed Yorktown project.

Andrew Cuomo said that New York State’s commitment to the development of renewable energy will be unwavering, which will promote our clean energy economy and advance our country-led plan to combat climate change.
