In 2021, solar and wind continue to dominate new capacity additions, with the two technologies together accounting for 88% of all new renewable electricity generation, with solar generation up 19% year over year and wind up 13%.

In 2021, 60% of the world's new renewable energy installations will come from Asia, with China being the largest contributor, with 121 GW of new installed capacity; Europe and North America, led by the United States, rank second and third, respectively, with an increase of 39 gigawatts. gigawatts, 38 gigawatts. Renewable energy capacity in Africa grew by 3.9% and Central America and the Caribbean by 3.3%, although growth was steady, both regions grew at a rate well below the global average, indicating the need for greater international cooperation to optimize electricity markets and drive large-scale investment in these regions.

It is worth mentioning that with the increase in newly installed capacity in major regions of the world in previous years, the total installed capacity of solar energy globally has now exceeded that of wind energy. In terms of wind energy, wind energy continued to expand at a lower rate in 2021 compared to 2020, adding 93 GW of new capacity compared to 111 GW last year.
