The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) has recently launched the Solar Irrigation Enhancement of Agricultural Resilience Project (SoLAR) as the second phase of the “Solar Pump Irrigation” initiative launched in early 2016. The new buy solar panel for home project aims to replace solar-powered irrigation pumps with solar-powered irrigation systems in Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan.
"We are working with government agencies in Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan, which will be tasked with funding and installing solar irrigation pumps," said Aditi Mukherji, senior social scientist at IWMI.
Mukeji revealed that the pumps will be owned by private companies. They receive loans from government agencies to provide irrigation services to farmers who buy water.
"Given that these countries already have a considerable number of solar irrigation pumps, our project is not to install more pumps, but to study their impact on agriculture and farmers' livelihoods," Mukeji explained.
"If you combine SoLAR with the right policies, institutional support, and financial guidance, it will turn the vicious cycle of water-energy-climate into a virtuous cycle," Mukji said.
The project is funded by the Swiss Development Cooperation Agency (SDC). "We will complete the project in the next 4 years and hope to benefit more people," Mukji said.
