Germany announces carbon neutrality by 2045

    Merkel made a video speech at the 2021 "Petersburg Climate Dialogue" held in Berlin on the same day, saying that Germany had previously passed the "Climate Protection Act" to legally determine the road to achieve carbon neutrality, but in accordance with the recent requirements of the Federal Constitutional Court , It is necessary to pay more attention to intergenerational justice in climate protection and make specific arrangements on how to achieve carbon neutrality.

    Germany's "Climate Protection Law" passed and entered into force in 2019 stipulates that Germany should achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and by 2030, it should achieve a reduction of at least 55% of its total greenhouse gas emissions compared with 1990. Merkel said, "(New requirements) mean that we must adjust emission reduction targets in different economic sectors."

    Merkel said that climate protection requires global cooperation, which not only involves reducing emissions through technology transfer, but also includes issues such as adaptability and resilience to climate change. Developed countries have pledged to mobilize 100 billion U.S. dollars of public and private funds for climate financing by 2020, and agreed to extend this goal to 2025.     Merkel said that the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in Glasgow, UK in November this year will discuss new financing targets starting in 2025, and Germany is also ready to make a fair contribution to the new financing targets after  2025.

    The "Petersburg Climate Dialogue" informal ministerial meeting was initiated by Germany and has been held in Berlin, the capital of Germany, every year since 2011 to prepare for the UN Climate Change Conference to be held at the end of the year. This year's conference will last two days and will be held online.
