According to Forbes News, the United Arab Emirates Hydropower Corporation (EWEC) recently announced that it has completed the bidding for the AlDhafra photovoltaic power generation solar system for home project in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Abu Dhabi National Energy Corporation (TAQA), EDF (EDF), China JinkoSolar And Masdar, another UAE local company, won the bid and signed a 30-year long-term power purchase agreement (PPA).
According to the plan, the project is located in the AlDhafra area of Abu Dhabi, with an estimated area of approximately 20 square kilometers and is scheduled to be put into commercial operation in the first quarter of 2022. After the successful commissioning, the AlDhafra photovoltaic power generation project will provide electricity to 160,000 households in Abu Dhabi, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 2.4 million tons per year. However, as of now, the project stakeholders have not disclosed the total investment scale.
Forbes News pointed out that it is worth noting that the AlDhafra photovoltaic power generation project in Abu Dhabi has two major "laurels": one is the huge installed capacity of the project. It is reported that the total installed capacity of the project reaches 2 GW, which is by far the largest single photovoltaic power station in the world. The second is that the power generation cost of the project has hit a record low in the global renewable energy power generation cost. According to estimates, the power generation cost of the project is only $13.5/MWh, which is lower than the record of $16.44/MWh set by a photovoltaic power generation project in Portugal in 2019.
TAQA CEO Jasim Husain Thabet said: "The large installed capacity and low electricity price prove the feasibility of promoting the development of the renewable energy industry at the national level. The AlDhafra project will become a benchmark project in our energy sector."
